It is fun to make stuff that is, well... fun. As a hobby I like to pick a subject and build it as a model. This was originally just going to be a made up lathe at 1/3rd scale but then having a section of workshop added to it.
The benches was a trip to the hardware to buy a selection of small timbers and then to build simple box structures. The fun was to bang them up and really age them. Based on old benches from over 100 years ago.
The lathe was based on an old one of mine and a mix of antique lathes. Most of it is wood with plastic details. This is a static model only, so nothing moves. Again, a lot of the fun is making it look old and used.
The bench was a simple wood box. The lathe motor is a plastic pipe with plastic strip detailing. The end caps were turned in wood. The lathe frame is wood with plastic trim. The chuck is also wood with plastic trim.
Pulleys were turned in wood and textured to look like castings. The cogs came from toys and old mechanisms. All the structure is wood. There are some parts turned in aluminium and brass.
Smaller sections were made out of plastic to give me a better finish. It is all dressed in miniature nuts and bolts. As I write this, I’ve decided to go back and add more grease and grime.
A bit of a set up with one of my robot characters, more on him later. I have lots of old junk that makes perfect dressing details for these models.
The robot looks to be making a new head for himself.
A selection of 1/3rd scale tools made to dress the set. The mallet is based on one my dad made when he was a child. The saw blade was an old blunt saw that I cut up to make the scale saw from.
